Summary:
Memoirs of the French Jewish historian. He was born in St. Petersburg in 1910 and immigrated with his family to Paris in 1920. Pt. 2 (p. 65-153), written in 1946, relates Poliakov's experiences between 1940-44. He volunteered for the army in 1940 and was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and returned to Paris, where he found his sister; the rest of the family had fled to southern France. In October 1941 he left Paris and joined Zalman Chneerson's Orthodox organization in Marseille. There he made contact with Joseph Bass and began working with his illegal rescue network. His activities included the production of false papers, the rescue of most of Chneerson's group which had moved to Nice, and some trips as a liaison person. His tasks were reduced in 1944, following a disagreement with Bass concerning the creation of a Jewish guerrilla unit in the Haute-Loire; Poliakov opposed the idea.
