"One of the significant trends in mental hygiene today is the increasing amount of attention directed to what might be called "the psychology of normal people." This textbook is a product of that trend. Its purpose is to help ordinary, everyday people--people with the usual number of problems--to gain a better understanding of themselves and others so that they may live happier and more effective lives. This book is also the product of the trend toward General Education. San Francisco State College has participated in this trend during the past few years by developing an integrated sequence of courses based on student needs and emphasizing the understanding of man and his physical and social environment. The basic offerings in the field of psychology have been drastically revised under this new plan. The old required course in psychology was one semester in length and consisted of a sampling of widely differentiated areas in psychology. The new course covers two semesters and has as its purpose aiding the student to understand himself and others and helping him with problems of occupational choice and adjustment, courtship and marriage, and attaining success in college. Today, after almost five years of experimentation and trial, both students and teaching staff are generally agreed that the new course does its work well. Its success has doubtless been due largely to the enthusiasm and flexibility of the teaching staff, who have met the challenge of the new course by developing curricular materials and methods appropriate to its philosophy and goals"-- Preface.
