Summary:
"The purpose of the volume which Dr. Arlitt here presents is to help parents who know little of psychological theory to understand what children' are like and how they grow. In the chapter on "How Your Child Thinks" there is an especially clear and simple explanation of the scientific facts in regard to the way a child's mind develops. In the other chapters the author has provided brief explanations and a generous number of illustrations and suggestions in order to help parents to understand the reasons for child behavior and to make clear their application in life situations which are familiar to every parent. The book does not intend to make fathers and mothers overconscious of their task nor to suggest that parenthood is overwhelming. Dr. Arlitt assumes that parents take pleasure in their children and that by means of a greater understanding of them, and a greater confidence in living with them, they will enjoy them even more. To the parent educator this volume offers an opportunity to consider the value of a more ample use of actual episodes in the lives of children as teaching material than is usually included in the literature of the pre-school period"--Introduction.
