Este libro es producto de una investigación que, con mayor o menor intensidad, duró más de veinticinco años y se extendió a una docena de países. Juan Masó Parra es quizás la figura más controversial que produjo el proceso independentista cubano del siglo XIX y, al mismo tiempo, una de las menos conocidas. Combatiente de las tres guerras que ensangrentaron la Isla entre 1868 y 1898, Juan Masó Parra entró en las filas independentistas a muy temprana edad y las abandonó cinco días antes de la llegada a La Habana del acorazado Maine cuya voladura poco después determinó la entrada de Estados Unidos en la guerra contra España. Ante esas circunstancias, Juan Masó Parra propuso y las autoridades españolas aceptaron organizar una brigada de excombatientes cubanos para luchar «contra los invasores de la América del Norte». Después de la derrota de España, Masó Parra fue ignorado por cronistas e historiadores, y su nombre, convertido en anatema, desapareció del discurso nacional. Este trabajo explora su trayecto vital, pero además de ser un ensayo biográfico revela también informaciones novedosas acerca de los hechos en que Juan Masó Parra participó y que conforman una parte importante del relato fundacional de Cuba como país independiente.

This book is the product of an investigation that, with greater or lesser intensity, lasted more than twenty-five years and extended to a dozen countries. Juan Masó Parra is perhaps the most controversial figure that produced the Cuban independence process of the 19th century and, at the same time, one of the least known. A fighter in the three wars that bloodied the island between 1868 and 1898, Juan Masó Parra entered the independence ranks at an early age and left them five days before the arrival of the battleship Maine in Havana, the blasting of which soon after determined the entry of States. United in the war against Spain. In these circumstances, Juan Masó Parra proposed and the Spanish authorities agreed to organize a brigade of Cuban ex-combatants to fight "against the invaders from North America." After the defeat of Spain, Masó Parra was ignored by chroniclers and historians, and his name, turned into an anathema, disappeared from the national discourse. This work explores his life trajectory, but in addition to being a biographical essay, it also reveals new information about the events in which Juan Masó Parra participated and that make up an important part of the founding story of Cuba as an independent country.
