Summary:
Embarrassment: The addled, constricted feeling we get when we fart loudly in a bookshop. Hwyl: Literally the word for a boat sail, hwyl is a wonderfully onomatopoeic Welsh word (pronounced who-eel) that means exuberance or excitement, as if clipping along on a gust of wind. Mudita: An experience of joy on hearing of someone else's good fortune. Ruinenlust: Feeling irresistibly drawn to crumbling buildings and abandoned places. Vergüenza ajena: A vicarious humiliation, usually felt toward strangers. You might experience it's when a politician mispronounces an important name but insists it's been said correctly. Cyberchondria: Anxiety about "symptoms" of an "illness" fueled by Internet "research." Toska: A Russian emotion once described by Vladimir Nabokov as "a dull ache" of the soul, "a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness." Love: It's just, you know ... love. Umpty: A feeling of everything being "too much" and all in the wrong way. Its only known cure: laughter. Joy: From the Old French joie (a jewel), this emotion dazzles us into submission. Awumbuk: From the Baining people of Papua New Guinea, the emptiness we feel after visitors depart. Suspicion: Are you sure you don't mean paranoia? Book jacket.
