Summary:

Description of an auto-da-fé held at the cathedral in Mexico City on 23 January 1647, with the names, cities of origin and residence, ages, and sentences of twenty-one prisoners accused of heresy and judaizing. The prisoners, nineteen men aged 21 to 58 and two women aged 36 and 40, mostly originally from Portugal, were accused of observing la ley de Moyses (the law of Moses) and rites and ceremonies including circumcision; and they received various sentences always including acts of penitence, confiscation of property, formal abjuration of errors, and exile, and sometimes also including numbers of lashes and varying lengths of imprisonment. One man was sentenced to five years on a Spanish galley (f. 17r-18r); another, a doctor, had his degrees nullified and was prohibited from practicing medicine (f. 23v-25v). The inquisitors were Juan Saenz de Mañozca (Juan de Mañozca y Zamora, archbishop of Mexico, 1645-1650), Francisco de Estrada y Escovedo, and Licentiate Bernabe de la Higuera y Amarillas (title page, f. 2r), and the account is dedicated to Garcia Sarmiento de Sotomayor, Viceroy of New Spain from 1642 to 1647.

Layout: Written in 24-25 long lines; in the section listing each of the accused (f. 8v-25v), a left margin is ruled in ink and the names extend into the margin.

Decoration: Full-page pen and wash illustration of the emblem of the Tribunal de la Inquisición en México, with the arm of a conquistador holding a crucifix and enclosed by the motto Exurge Domine iudica causam tuam (f. 3r); full-page pen and wash illustration of the coat of arms of the Dominican order (f. 4r); title page written in red ink (f. 2r).

Binding: Later silk over paperboard with two bead and loop catches and a ribbon bookmark; material is frayed on fore edge and spine; a printed leaf with Latin text shows through slightly where the material over the spine is frayed.

Origin: Written in Mexico City after 1647, date of the events described (f. 6v; erroneous date 1747 on title page possibly written later, f. 2r).
