The writer's husband was a lieutenant in the 1st U.S. infantry at the time, and stationed on the Texas frontier.

A unique copy with a reprinted redated title page created for [the author's] youngest son, sixteen-year-old (Egbert) Francis Griffin-Vielé, in a morocco presentation binding and slipcase by Belz-Niedrée of Paris."--Schimmel. With his dated 19th-century autograph ("Francis Griffin Vielé Souvenir d'amour de sa mere cherie - Paris 1876-") on blank leaf following front free endpapers and the gold-stamped green leather armorial bookplate ("EX LIBRIS BLAIRHAME") of Mrs. J. Insley Blair (née Natalie Bennett Knowlton) on front pastedown.
