Smith copy purchased for the Penn Libraries in 2022 from Blackwell's Rare Books.
Acquired for the Penn Libraries with assistance from the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Fund.
Smith copy has autograph ("Israel Holmgren") on front pastedown; early manuscript ownership inscription ("Bibliotheae RR. PP. Franciscanoru[m] Solodori.") of the library of Franziskanerkloster Solothurn; manuscript inscription ("Con. Solod.") of the same institution at head of title leaf; oval blue ink stamp ("J.K. PROKSCH") on verso of title leaf; dated 17th-century autograph ("Stäffann Reÿnahert St R 16i2") on back free endpaper.
Smith copy bound in a portion of a parchment leaf from a mid-14th-century, probably German missal with text for the liturgy of Wednesday in the octave of Easter frame-ruled in ink in double columns, written in a Gothic bookhand in dark ink with rubrics in red ink, 1- or 2-line initials in red or blue ink, and capital strokes in red ink (left board: John 21:3-7; right board: Acts 3:19, gradual "Haec dies quam fecit Dominus," and sequence "Agni paschalis esu") over 17th-century pasteboards; evidence of 2 fore-edge ties; remains of manuscript spine label; all edges blue.
Smith copy has printed paper slip with bookseller's description (of this copy?) on front pastedown.
Smith copy: "slight browning throughout (damp low-quality paper), a little heavier to handful of gatherings, small light water stain extending from lower outer corner of B5-6, tiny work trail towards foot of fifth leaf in all gatherings (touching or affecting the odd letter), minor ink smudge to blank verso of last leaf, occasional very minor bleeding from old edge paint"--Bookseller's description.
