- Summary:
- The "Revue de l'art Chrétien" (1857-1914) was an important periodical of the Gothic Revival movement in Europe. It was first published in Paris under the direction of the abbé Jules Corblet, a scholar who remained its guiding force until the early 1880s, when its production was taken over by Henri and Jules Desclée, Belgian publishers of medieval Christian art and literature. The Desclées had connections with a broader Catholic revival in Belgium that included the famous St. Luke Schools, which trained artists in the techniques of the Christian arts and crafts of the Middle Ages, most notably manuscript illumination. As subsequently published in Lille, France, by Desclée, De Brouwer et Cie, the Revue featured contributions by archaeologists, art historians, and artists from French, Belgian, and other European institutions. As the publication developed, it included not only scholarly essays on the symbolism of religious painting, sculpture, liturgical objects, inscriptions, embroidery, illumination, and architecture but also a calendar of related events in the universities, museums, and religious institutions of the whole continent. A regular section on bibliography had the same continent-wide scope. Images, both drawings and photographs, illustrate most articles. Students of the history of nineteenth-century Europe, religion, art, and architecture will find this a primary source of extraordinary value.
