- The collection Nineteenth century crime: literature, reports, and true crime from the American Antiquarian Society contains historical accounts of crime and punishment; novels dealing with crime, adventure and war; legal documents including case law and legislative reports; and other supporting documents from the nineteenth century. The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in the United States saw the establishment and growth of the penitentiary system, and by the late nineteenth century, the modern US correctional institution was established. These and other social changes are reflected in this collection.
