Summary:
This collection contains autobiographies, biographies, histories and fictional accounts of life on the frontier, all published between 1854 and 1944, demonstrating links between real life as lived on the frontier and the stories told about it. Most works concern the life of a single individual, though historical sketches of areas and communities are also represented. There are tales of the very famous such as Buffalo Bill. Others writings are by those who lived on the frontier, providing first-hand accounts of their own lives. Sensationalistic accounts of bandits, murders, and Native American conquest formed a major strain of literature represented here. At the other end of the spectrum are simple historical accounts. Many of the books have illustrations, engravings, and photographs, and some are signed by the authors or subjects.
