Summary:
Charles Gibbs and Thomas J. Wansley were tried and convicted of murdering William Thornby and William Roberts, captain and first mate of the brig Vineyard, in November 1830; they were hanged in New York in 1831.
Notes:
The title is printed to the sides of and below a title-page illustration of the execution. At head of title: "Whosoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed."
"It has recently been ascertained that his real name is Jas. Jeffries, instead of Charles Gibbs."--Page 16.
This is a reissue of "Confession of Charles Gibbs the pirate" (McDade 337) with the addition of a new title leaf and an additional leaf (conjugate with the new title leaf) at end. The "Addenda" begins on the verso of the new title leaf (which is numbered "18") and continues on page 19 (the recto of the added leaf at end). Also on the added leaf are "The aspirations of a contrite sinner before death" (pages 19-20, in verse) and "Last dying words" (page 20).
