Biography/History:
Ḥevrah Ḥaluḳat ha-Shas was a study confraternity founded by Abraham ha-levi Lipschitz in December 1908 in the American Brothers of Israel Synagogue (f. 2r); Lipschitz (Kaunas, Lithuania, 1871-Fall River, 1943, son of Jacob ha-levi Lipschutz of Kaunas (1838-1921), historian and secretary of Isaac Elhanan Spektor), appointed rabbi in 1904 administering the three Fall River congregations; the Ḥevrah was possibly disbanded after 1911.
Summary:
This is the manuscript pinkas of the Ḥevrah Ḥaluḳat ha-Shas in Fall River and the appointment of the presiding members; the manuscript served as a ledger of the donors, participants, and related information for the group. The group was founded on Wednesday, the fifth day of Hanukkah 5669 (23 December 1908); the laws of the group include the completion of at least one tractate of the Talmud per Hebrew year, Siyum celebrations with other members at the synagogue, inscribing the member's name in the manuscript, and including the records of the group's learning with the community study roster (f. 2r; a single name is recorded below as one who studied the entire Talmud in one year). Gabbaim (presiding members, listed on f. 3r), donors to the fund to purchase volumes of the Talmud (f. 3v), members (f. 4r-v), and study allocations (1908-9, f. 5r; 1909-10, f. 6r; 1910-11, f. 7r) are listed in the pinkas, blank after 1911 (possibly from disbandment). An updated list of members (some with addresses in English) is left in the manuscript. Written in an eastern-European cursive script on semi-glossed ledger paper; title with calligraphy (פנקס filled with pastel; f. 1r); bound in cardboard boards with a tape spine (deteriorating).
