- "In his novel "Gagged Mouths," the Kuwaiti writer Ahmed Muhammad Al-Tarrah monitors the general social environment in his country. Breaking with customs becomes next to impossible. The novel discusses the issue of patriarchal authority in Arab society. A father who appears to be a victim of childbirth will repeat what he lived under, under his father's custody, and repeat his father's behavior with his wife and his children. Youssef was brought by his father from Cairo to Kuwait and was deprived of his studies and his girlfriend following a snitch from a malevolent friend; Youssef was forced to marry his cousin, he will treat his wife and sons the same way, he will impose obedience and deprivation of work on his wife and kids ..."-- Translation, abridgment, and interpretation of the Arabic synopsis
- "في روايته "أفواه مُكمَّمة" يرصد الكاتب الكويتي أحمد محمد الطرّاح البيئة الاجتماعية العامة في بلاده، والتي يتوجب على الفرد الذي يعيش تحت سلطتها أن يتخذ أحد موقفين: القبول أو الرفض، فالأفراد في هذه الرواية هم أسرى ظروفهم (العادات والتقاليد) التي يغدو الفكاك منها أقرب إلى المستحيل. تناقش الرواية موضوع السلطة الأبوية في المجتمع العربي، فالأب الذي يبدو ضحية بالولادة سوف يكرر ما عاشه في كنف أبيه ويعيد إنتاج سلطته الأبوية ويفرغها في زوجته وأولاده الذكور والإناث معاً. الأب يوسف الذي أحضره والده من القاهرة إلى الكويت وحرمه من دراسته وحبيبته إثر وشاية من زميل حاقد؛ وزوَّجه بابنة عمه قسراً، سوف يُعامِلْ زوجته وبنيه معاملة مماثلة يفرض على الزوجة السمع والطاعة والحرمان من العمل، ويفرض على الابنة نوع الاختصاص في الجامعة والزواج بابن عمها، ويفرض على الأبناء الذكور نمط حياة لا يجدون فيه ذواتهم، فنجد من أبنائه من يخضع لسيطرته قسراً ويدفع حياته ثمناً لحريته، ومنهم من يتحايل على الظروف ويكسب الرهان والمنصب السياسي الذي يدفعه إليه والده تحت شعار القضاء على الفساد ومساعدة المحتاجين."-- various websites
