Summary:

Curiosity as a motive. The need to make what is invisible visible, to add what is unknown to what we already know, underlies Ravenstein's basement project. Behind the facades in the old part of the city, the part within the city walls of yesteryear, more than a hundred cellars are hidden. As far as we know, no attempt has been made before to photograph all the cellars of a late medieval city center in the Netherlands. Basements are, after all, architectural remains from long ago. With their constant low temperature and darkness, they had an important function at the time: to keep food from spoiling. At the same time they served as a foundation on which the house rested. The arrival of refrigerators and freezers have largely made the cellars superfluous. But they are there, and they will stay. Their architectural details probably contain a lot of information about the history of the city. That fact in itself is a good reason to photograph the underground spaces. By describing and measuring them at the same time, it not only becomes a beautiful photo book, but we also obtain an interesting document with a greater scope. And there's more

Nieuwsgierigheid als drijfveer. De behoefte om wat onzichtbaar is zichtbaar te maken, wat onbekend is toe te voegen aan hetgeen we al weten, ligt ten grondslag aan het kelderproject van Ravenstein. Achter de gevels in het oude deel van de stad, het deel binnen de stadsmuren van weleer, gaan ruim honderd kelders schuil. Voor zover wij weten is niet eerder een poging gedaan alle kelders van een laatmiddeleeuws stadscentrum in Nederland te fotograferen. Kelders zijn welbeschouwd bouwkundige overblijfselen van lang geleden. Ze hadden met hun constante lage temperatuur en duisternis destijds een belangrijke functie: voedsel tegen bederf behoeden. Tegelijk deden ze dienst als fundering waarop het woonhuis rustte. De komst van koelkast en diepvries hebben de kelders goeddeels overbodig gemaakt. Maar ze zitten er, en ze blijven er. Hun bouwkundige details bevatten waarschijnlijk veel informatie over de geschiedenis van de stad. Dat gegeven op zich is al een goede reden de ondergrondse ruimtes fotografisch vast te leggen. Door ze tegelijkertijd ook te beschrijven en te meten wordt het niet alleen een fraai fotoboek, maar verkrijgen we een interessant document met een grotere reikwijdte. En er is meer
