Summary:
Description: Santiago Atitlán occupies a small peninsula between the Bay of San Pedro and Lake Atitlán that can be viewed from San Jorge la Laguna, on the north side of the lake (489, 504). The archaeological site, Chiutinamet or Chiyá, the ancient capitol, lies on a hill across the bay from the town, on the skirts of the Volcano San Pedro (475, 495, 467). In 1972 the majority of the thatched-roof houses or ranchitos were gathered in family compounds (469, 471, 470, 63, 56) In the central patio of a compound or sitio the corn was laid out to dry (57). There was only one road for vehicles, and the paths through town were often rocky and almost blocked by boulders (58). Every compound had a sweat bath or temascal (55, 64, 668). The 16th century church dominated the center of town, and the school, municipal offices and open market surround the central plaza (474, 473, 76). The colorful clothing typical of the Tz'utujils is unlike that of any other Maya town (171, 169, 273, 274, 281, 575, 584, 585, 587, 646, 652, 653, 510, 511). The cofradía houses and the church were the centers of the traditional "Old Ways" (230, 231, 232, 358, 284, 180, 177, 546).
