- Description: This document provides further details of materials related to Semana Santa, Holy week, from Linda O'Brien's 1972.03 and 1974.05 collections. This catalog was produced in collaboration with Kathryn King. Columns A and B: UCLA Ethnomusicology Archives numbers for recordings Columns C and D: Collector's numbers. For example: 8.71.2 ? 55 means: "recorded in August of 1971 on the second reel of tape ? 55th item recorded"Column E: Exact date of recordingColumn I: instruments include 5-string guitar, known in the sixteenth century as the guitarra española, uses re-entrant tuning the marimba sencilla has a diatonic keyboard (no sharps or flats) the marimba de tecomates has gourds beneath the keys as resonators xul (pito): the cane flute typical of Santiago Atitlán k'jom (tamborón): the large double skin drum, usually accompanied by the xul. In Atitlán there was only one flute and drum ensemble, which was used to announce and accompany events. chirimía: a double-reed woodwind instrument of the shawm family. Chirimías are common in parts of Guatemala, but there was none in Atitlán. Chirimía and drum musicians were brought from Totonicapán to accompany the Dance of the Conquest during the town fiesta. c'un c'un: commonly called a "slit drum" or teponaxtli, is a log, hollowed out and cut in "H" shape to form two keys.
