Description: Scope/Content: Ile-Ife: Obameri music(1) Side 1-01: Excerpt of Cherubim and Seraphim chorus with [akuba] and bell; (2) Side 1-02: Praises with ipe (ikpe) trumpet for the Olukure of Ife; (3) Side 1-02, cont.: Female chorus with clappingDescription: Ipe (also epe or ikpe) is a conical ivory trumpet owned by the Ooni (king) of Ife and used exclusively for important ceremonial occasions. In this recording, the Ooni's trumpeter (afonpe) is declaiming praises and proverbs in honor of the Olukure, an Ife sub-chief responsible for organizing and celebrating the annual festival of Obameri, who is a legendary Ife historical figure (Thieme 1969: 404-405). The ipe trumpeter is accompanied by agogo, an iron bell found in single or double varieties.
