- Summary:
- Description: Scope/Content: Ile-Ife: Obameri Shrine Music [agogo ensemble, ipe, and chorus]Description: Typically incorporated in a wide variety of musical contexts, the agogo is especially prominent in Ife and Ijesha-Ife areas. In the 1965 Obameri festival recorded here, an ensemble of agogo and an ipe trumpet provided accompaniment for the sacred portions of the Obameri festival. The agogo ensemble accompanies praises for the deity Ogun, ceremonial invocations, and the dances and processions of the Olukure, the chief responsible for the festival. Typical of multiple agogo ensembles, the bells in this recording are organized in multi-part, polyrhythmic textures (Thieme 1969: 331-333; Beier, "A year of festivals").
