Summary:
Description: Scope/Content: Ile-Ife: Ifa music (1) Side 1-01 : Ifa drums - Keregidi, firigba, two agogo, leader and chorus; continued; (2) Side 1-02: Demonstration of talking on keregidi; (3) Side 1-03: Pere ensemble - two pere, two agogo, leader and chorus Description: Ile-Ife is the historical center of Ifa (Orunmila) worship in Yorubaland. The Ifa drums used in Ile-Ife are different from those used in Ede [c.f. recording OMR022]. The first track is recorded in an Ifa temple, where a leader and chorus sing responsorially to the accompaniment of single-membrane peg-constructed drums. The keregidi igbese plays the role of iya'lu (lead drum) and is used to talk. See second track (side 1-02) for demonstration of keregidi igbesi drum language. The firigba drum and two agogo bells provide accompaniment. The third track is recorded outside the temple, where two pere drums and two agogo accompany a leader and chorus singing responsorially. Agogo ensembles of two or more are commonly combined with drums during the recitation of odu, the sacred verses of Ifa (Thieme 1969: 331-333; 256).
