Although it was formerly more widespread and more commonly used, apinti is now found only in the Oyo area. This recording was made in Iseyin, near Oyo, where the ensemble consisted of two drums and one agogo bell. The musicians were traditional hunters and the drums reportedly used for hunters' ceremonies, Egungun festivals, and for social dances. These three types of repertoire are demonstrated here (Thieme 1969: 242, 249-50, 257).
