Summary:
Description: Scope/Content: Abeokuta: Giro Onikete (Babatunde Adewumi), Kete drumsby Giro Onikete (Babatunde Adewumi), ensemble leader (ogalu); self-taught drummer and dancer [see photo in Thieme 1969]Description: Kete is a single membrane drum constructed from a gourd with a wood shell affixed where the neck would be; iro wax is applied to center of drum. Kete dancing is acrobatic; iya'alu kete is speech surrogate and will direct the dancers; kete used primarily for entertainment at weddings, burial or wake, naming ceremony, or as a dance exhibition; performance requires five or more drummers, a master of ceremonies, and a "kiriboto" dancer; in several sources, the names kiriboto and bàtákoto have also been applied to kete drums and dance, though some claim that bàtákoto is a different kind of dance that is for the elderly (Thieme 1969: 116-145).
