- Summary:
- Description: Scope/Content: Abeokuta : Akisanye Compound; Erinle-Orisa worshippers accompanied by bembe drumsDescription: Bembe is a double-membrane, stick-beaten, cylindrical drum; one or two snare strings run diagonally across the membrane and are attached to both sides of the rim. Like kete, rhythms tend more towards strong beat emphases than towards syncopation or polyrhythmic concept. Bembe was possibly introduced to Egba areas by the Hausa. Bembe is used in Egba areas for social events like weddings, naming ceremonies, funerals, wakes, and masquerade processions, as well as to accompany songs in praise of orisa (deities), and to accompany the recitation of oriki (attributive poetry) (Thieme 1969: 146-157).
