- Summary:
- Document affirming the earlier rabbinical decree that rewards for custodianship, cantors, and other wardens of Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem strictly in spiritual reward and to abstain from payment or fee collection at sacred sites in the Holy Land, and that each appointee cannot be pushed out of duties without a special agreement, until the coming of the Messiah ("עד כי יבא שילה", penultimate line). Written in a cursive Moroccan-Oriental script in 11 lines, with signatures and tuǧras below, as well as affirmation text by the undersigners in a different hand; signed by Israel Jacob Burla (-1798; author of מקור ישראל and נחלת יהודה, both responsa), Moses Joseph Mordecai Meyuḥas (author of many works including מים שאל, son-in-law of Jom Tob Algazi), Shelomoh ben Yehudah ha-Kohen (-1827; cabalist, and emissary on behalf of Jerusalem to Turkey and Greece in 1818-1820; many of his works survive in manuscript), and Jacob Ḳural (-1818; Rishon le-Tsiyon of Jerusalem), and Raphael Saragossi (originally from Istanbul, Turkey). Verso written with a précis of the letter.
