本书是基于西双版纳田野的一项历史人类学研究."双重时间体系"指的是该地区社会由于历史上长期受缅甸和中原文化的双重影响,形成了一种二者并接的文化精神.这种文化精神表现为双重仪式周期交叠而成的社会节奏.从明代以来中华帝国对边疆地带的多重封建是"双重时间体系"形成的主要原因.该书回应了基于民族主义和认同政治对中国边疆民族问题的指摘.诸如版纳这类社会是多重文明关系的结果,这种情况在中国边疆广泛存在.中国历来的边疆治理都充分宽容文化混杂的特点,其制度核心精神恰恰是为边疆提供文化与社会发展的空间.
