- Summary:
- In the site of the church and former monastery of San Juan Bautista (formerly a teocalli, or sacred precinct, dedicated to a god of commerce called Yacapitzauac) in the town and municipality of Yecapixtla, located in the northeast of the state of Morelos in central Mexico, the church stands out for its beauty and refined architecture. A 16th century Augustinian construction, although Renaissance inspired, integrates, some Gothic elements, like the facade rose window. This book analyzes the most important iconographic elements exhibited in the two splendid facades of the church and the importance given to St. John the Baptist, the promotion of the Eucharist - the Augustinians were the first to give unreserved communion to the new converts - and the adaptation of structures and images of classical Antiquity. Support for ancient religion beliefs favored the creation of a syncretic discourse. Still today, the famous Rose window is suffering the consequences of the earthquake in 2017, that wreaked havoc in much of Mexico and especially in (the state of) Morelosʺ (HKB Translation) --Verso Cover.
