- Ictus is written for the Mivos Quartet to premiere at the Valencia International Performance Academy and Festival (VIPA) in the Summer of 2018. The word "ictus" is commonly defined as a sudden attack or stroke; in conducting, an ictus indicates the precise moment of a beat that articulates the pulse of the music to an ensemble. The speed going from one ictus point to another determines the tempo, wherein the eveness of the distribution affects the characters of the music. Without an actual conductor, this piece experiments with having flexible and changing ictus points, exploring different ways of distributing rhythms in a beat that eventually influences our perception of pulse in the music.
