- In many aspects, Free Module Study nº1 is a piece rooted to classical tradition. The piece is structured and constructed around the transformation of a central motive. The mathematical definition of a Free Module acts as the defining element of the compositional strategy. All the elements are treated independently, with a strong formal unity, reinforced by the use of the instrumentation. This generates a direct relation between the material used and the instrument performing this material. The transformation of the motives evolves from an almost naïve presentation of the material, pianopart, to a much more complex ensemble unity where the material flows into one sound body. The ensemble is treated as a sum of soloist in a constant transformation, moving towards a sonic amalgamation that behaves as a single force. The piece, deliberately avoids tempo changes. Related to the generated sets of linearly independent elements, a constant immobile tempo could be understood as a contradiction. In Free Module Study nº1 the tempo is the element of delimitation, that provides an invariant unity and cohesion to the modules.
