- At its most fundamental level, Cyraenes follows a timbral arc that moves from a clarinet spectrum (a defective harmonic spectrum that is characterized by odd-numbered harmonics), to a harmonic spectrum, to an increasingly inharmonic spectrum (one in which the partials do not coincide with whole-number ratios of the harmonic series), and finally arrives at a point of spectral saturation. Within each of these timbral areas, a second narrative guides the music: the movement from order to entropy, and back to order albeit in a different form. At times, this movement is an audible process that can be heard at the forefront of the music. Other times, the process is stretched temporally, obscuring the perceptibility of it, or even existing purely as a compositional guide below the surface of the music.
