Notes:
Vocalise II, for amplified alto and tenor saxophonists, is the second work of a series, which calls for the modulation of woodwind instrumental sounds by vocalizations. The performers' voice is used in various ways: exaggerating of the air aspect of woodwinds, creating beatings, controlling complex sound-multiphonics, and well as quoting passages of Viderum omnes, by Notre Dame School master Pérotin (circa 1200). The latter is a memorial for another French master, Pierre Boulez, who passed away during the composition of this work. Vocalise II, both instruments and their voices are treated as one compound instrument, thus allowing for endless sustains and highly rich and complex timbres. The work is commissioned by Ogni Suono and New Music USA.
