Schattenhaft is both a study of immobility and movement in pastel shades and a meditation on passage influenced by Nelly Sachs,whose poetry contributes a few words to the study. Schattenhaft was premiered by Valerie Philippin and Ensemble Multilatérale ; it can also be interpreted without a soprano.This work belongs to a collection of studies which are all short pieces for various chamber ensembles - studies in character, composition and listening, whose challenge lies at least as much in the musical quality necessary for their interpretation as in their more or less difficult execution.It is the central piece of a trilogy called Im Geheimnis : as a trilogy, this duo is surrounded by a solo viola piece (Schmetterling) and a cello solo piece (Schwalben).
