- "ספר זה הוא אסופת מאמרים מאת נתן זך שפורסמו בכתבי עת ובעיתונים בשנים 1996-1954, ועניינם יצירות פרוזה מקוריות ומתורגמות. בין השאר מופיעות כאן מסות רחבות יריעה כגון 'הסופר בחברת ההמונים', 'המסע הגדול', 'מסע בכחול' וה'"נפש החצויה" או סיפורו של תבליט', לצד מאמרים על יצירותיהם של עמוס עוז, ולדימיר נבוקוב וקפקא. בכך חובר כרך זה לקודמו, 'השירה שמעבר למילים' (2011), שעיקרו תיאוריה וביקורת על השירה העברית מן השנים 1973-1954. לראשונה מאז הופעת 'הרהורים על שירת אלתרמן' הנודע (1959) מתפרסם כאן מאמר נוסף של נתן זך על נתן אלתרמן, העוסק הפעם בספר 'שירי מכות מצרים', וכותרתו 'בין הפזמונאי והגּדולה'. המאמר הלא-גמור נערך מטיוטות ומהערות שהיו פזורות בכתבי יד שונים שחיבר זך במרוצת שנים לא מעטות. שתי מסות זוכות כאן להופעת בכורה בגרסתן השלמה. האחת היא 'מקום לא מקום', שנכתבה באמצע שנות השמונים ולאחר מכן נוספו לה טיוטות של שני פרקים. זוהי אחת המסות המרתקות שיצאו מתחת עט הפארקר 51 של זך. האחרת היא הפרק השני של 'מסע בכחול', שהפרק הראשון שלה פורסם ב-1986-1985 בשנתון 'אגרא'. גם זו צברה נוסחים שלא הבשילו לכדי מסה מגובשת, ועתה מופיע לראשונה ההמשך שזך ביקש לראות בו חלק מהותי ממסתו זו"--Back cover.
