- Summary:
- This leather-bound recipe book contains culinary, medicinal, and household recipes compiled by Thomas Ormsby and probably other members of the family from at least 1780 to 1813. A few pages contain dates at the bottom of the pages. Culinary recipes include both sweet and savory dishes, and use a diverse set of ingredients, many of which were not native to Ireland. For the most part, medicinal remedies are for common illnesses and household recipes are for making dyes, inks, and varnish, as well as solutions for cleaning. There are recipes in at least four different hands, two of which may be identified as belonging to Thomas and Adam Ormsby. The Ormsby family numbered pages for approximately half of the volume (p. 1-193) and most of the recipes on those numbered pages are listed in the table of contents at the back of the volume (p. 226-231). Pages 1 and 2 are listed in the table of contents but now missing. All page citations in this record refer to modern pagination in pencil in the lower outer corners. Within the volume, there are blank pages (p. 203-225), and missing pages (between p. 210-211). There is a sketch of a horse and what appears to be be practice handwriting (p. 232) and the names Thomas Ormsby and Adam Ormsby are written along with the locations of "B:more" (Ballinamore) and County Mayo (p. 232, i).
