Summary:
Historic study and catalogue of the colonial "Cristos de caña de maíz", or corn-pith religious statues of Christ elaborated in different parts of the state of Michoacán. Author Velarde Cruz presents an important inventory of the colonial sculptures using this technique, comprising in each entry photographic reproductions, the present location, the history and traditional contexts, the festivities around the devotions and in some cases, the authors. These sculptures are considered valued artistic expressions and historic testimonies of the early evangelization by the Franciscan missioners, some still subject to the devotion of the local faithful. Respecting the original contents of the 1st edition, this second edition is augmented with more detailed studies on the art of Matias de laCerda and his mestizo son Luis, a colonial family of artists very active in the creation of corn-pith sculptures in the region, while also highlights the syncretism of the colonial artistic icons of an imposed religion, elaborated by Indians with Pre-Hispanic techniques using local materials under the direction of the Spanish conquerors.
