Summary:
The SIGPLAN-SIGIR Interface Meeting, cosponsored by the Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology, was held on November 4-6, 1973. The Meeting was attended by over 170 persons, and three invited and eight contributed papers were presented. The invited paper by Susan Artandi, who was unable to attend the meeting, and the contributed paper by Carolyn J. Crouch, who could not attend because of illness, are included in this Proceedings. Also included is a brief information question and answer summary of the Workshop on the Evaluation of On-Line Interactive Retrieval Systems, conducted at Stanford University in April, 1973. Thomas L. Martin presented the background description of the Workshop and explained the summary.Conceived as an interface meeting where professionals in the areas of programming languages and information retrieval would seek to recognize common problems and to understand their different problems, the keyword for the Meeting organization was interaction. To promote interaction, a rather unusual format was adopted.(1) beginning with the Welcome, opening remarks, and the first invited paper on Sunday night provided an early opportunity for personal introductions;(2) each presentation of 20 minutes was followed by a 15 minute question period (denoted by QUESTIONS following the paper);(3) individual simultaneous 30 minute discussion sessions (denoted by DISCUSSION SESSION following the paper) were held whereby participants and the authors could engage in more lengthy, detailed discussion;(4) a "Birds of a Feather" session held on Monday night permitted informal treatment of topics arising during the earlier sessions; and(5) attendees presenting a brief abstract by 11:00 p.m. on Monday were allotted 10 minute discussion periods in an interactive discussion session held on Tuesday afternoon (these are included under INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION SESSION).
