Summary:
The 2020 volume of Ceramics in America is a celebration of the depth and diversity of ceramics used in the American context. Beautifully illustrated articles explore the making of ornamental building bricks and the role of manufactured tableware in promoting issues of social equality and global injustices. The important history of Philadelphia's Franklin Institute in fostering domestic ceramics manufacturing in the United States is reviewed. A thrilling narrative recounts and archaeological discovery of an exotic "black delft" teapot from Charleston's Drayton Hall and subsequent pursuit of an extremely rare antique parallel. Other articles include significant new findings concerning Martha Washington's and Thomas Jefferson's Chinese porcelains, and a surprising account of Pueblo pottery collected by the Villeroy & Boch Company of Mettlach, Germany in the late nine-teenth century.
