Summary:
This is a manuscript of an inscribed endpaper, formerly at the front of an octavo Hebrew Pentateuch printed during the 17th century. The earliest inscription is dated winter 5427 (1667-8) by Barukh b. Tsevi of Nieder-Ingelheim (today Ingelheim am Rhein, near Mainz) stating that he taught Yeḥiʼel Karbach, son of the local rabbi Netʼanel (verso); the second inscription, dated 1 Sivan 5442 (June 7, 1682) written by Shemuʼel b. Liese Eliʻezer of Gustavsburg used it to teach Löb b. Juda of Jülich (שיילך; recto). Yeḥiʼel b. Shimʻon Rheinfelsen of Guntersblum purchase inscription (with Sheḥechiyanu) on recto, stating that it was purchased from the widow Teise on 14 Kislev 5503 (December 11, 1742) with an additional signature of his wife, Frenchen bat Daṿid. Yeḥiʼel again inscribed the book on 14 Shevaṭ 5509 (February 2, 1749) and subsequently wrote that his progeny should fast in commemoration of a miracle which occurred to him on the evening of 9 Shevaṭ 5511 in which he slipped into a well while drawing water and emerged unscathed on his own; Yitsḥaḳ Döbele b. Ḥayim, a teacher of Yeḥiʼel's son Daṿid in 1749, signs below (verso). Final inscription by Eliyahu b. Ḥayim, ritual scribe of the town of Gauersheim, 30 Shevaṭ 5594 (February 9, 1834).
