Summary:
Recorded a few weeks after the opera's world premiere at the Met, this broadcast captures the all-star original cast of Tobias Picker's work based on Theodore Dreiser's searing 1925 novel of murder and social ambition. At its center is Nathan Gunn as Clyde Griffiths, the impoverished but ambitious young man from the Midwest who comes to upstate New York to work in a factory owned by his wealthy uncle. Patricia Racette is Roberta Alden, a worker in the factory who becomes his lover. But Clyde has his eye on the wealthy socialite Sondra Finchley (Susan Graham) and plots to marry her--with only Roberta and their unborn child standing in his way. Dolora Zajick gives a heartbreaking performance as Clyde's mother, and James Conlon conducts Picker's nuanced score.
Contents:
'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Would you look at J. P. Morgan
Vanderbilt, Astor, Dupont, James J. Hill
My name's Clyde Griffiths
Can't believe the heat in here
A motor car!
Good evening
Oh, good evening, Mister Griffiths
Out for a walk?
You've done more than enough
So what was it like?
New York
New York has changed me
Gilbert Griffiths!
Come on Roberta
My cousin Clyde is from Chicago
Are your dreams inside these pockets?
It's a dizzy thing, this society biz!
Overture
Today I pretended you'd be here soon
We should go dancing tonight
Dear Clyde, unless I hear from you
And so Jesus said: "You will see a donkey tied there with its colt beside it"
Praise the Father and the Son
Miss Finchley? I work at the factory
That minister sure can talk
It will not take too long
Isn't it still and peaceful?
Gilbert and Bella will soon be home
Accused of murder!
When your uncle brought you here, I was afraid
You said you were drifting together
Tell us. Tell us, Griffiths
She did not slip off that boat
Clyde, this letter is so that you will not think that someone once dear to you has utterly forgotten you
It's almost time, Clyde.
