Summary:
Ever since it opened the Metropolitan Opera in 1883, Gounod's operatic adaptation of Goethe's immortal tragedy has been an audience favorite. Throughout, the score juxtaposes poignant lyricism with playful melody, martial vigor with scintillating drama--not to mention some of the most popular arias in the French repertoire. In this performance from 1964, celebrated conductor Fausto Cleva leads some of the era's most exciting artists. Tenor Barry Morell sings the title role, an aging philosopher yearning for a new lease on life. He meets his match in the suave yet sinister Méphistophélès of bass Cesare Siepi, who gives Faust that second chance in exchange for his soul. Rounding out the principal trio, the radiant soprano Anna Moffo is Marguerite, the unfortunate victim of circumstance who ultimately receives redemption in the opera's glorious finale.

Introduction
Rien! En vain j'interroge
Ah! Paresseuse fille qui sommeille encor
Mais ce Dieu, que peut-il pour moi?
A moi les plaisirs
Vin ou bière
O sainte médaille
Avant de quitter ces lieux
Allons, amis!
Le veau d'or est toujours debout!
Merci de ta chanson!
De l'enfer qui vient émousser nos armes
Nous nous retrouverons, mes amis!
Ainsi que la briser légère
Ne permettez-vous pas ma belle demoiselle
Intermezzo
Faites-lui mes aveux
C'est ici?
Quel trouble inconnu
Salut! demeure chaste et pure
Alerte, la voilà!
Je voudrais bien savoir ... Il était un Roi de Thulé
Un bouquet ... O Dieu! Que de bijoux! ... Ah! je ris de me voir
Seigneur Dieu, que vois-je!
Prenez mon bras un moment!
Il était temps ... Ô nuit, étends sur eux ton ombre!
Il se fait tard ... Laisse-moi, laisse-moi
Ô nuit d'amour!
Divine pureté! Chaste innocence
Seigneur, daignez permettre à votre humble servante
Dieu! Quelle est cette voix ... Quand du Seigneur le jour luira
Déposons les armes
Gloire immortelle De nos aïeux (Soldier's chorus)
Allons, Siebel, entrons dans la maison!
Qu'attendez-vous encore? ... Vous qui faites l'endormie
Que voulez-vous messieurs?
Par ici, mes amis! ... Toi! te voilà dans la mauvaise voie
Dans les bruyères ... Arrête!
Jusqu'aux premiers feux de matin
Ballet
Que ton ivresse, ô volupté ... Qu'astu donc?
Introduction (Prison Scene)
Va t'en ... Mon coeur est pénétré dépouvante!
Marguerite! ... Oui, c'est toi, je t'aime
Alerte! alerte! ... Anges purs, anges radieux.
