Summary:
Saint-Saëns's sweeping retelling of the story of Samson and Delilah has long been a vehicle for star singers on the Met stage. In this Saturday matinee radio broadcast from the 2018-19 season, tenor Gregory Kunde and mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili take on the title roles, delivering explosive performances as the embattled biblical lovers. Bass-baritone Laurent Naouri sings the sinister High Priest of Dagon, with baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the sneering Abimélech and bass Günther Groissböck as the wise Old Hebrew. Sir Mark Elder leads the kaleidoscopic score, which includes a number of rousing choruses and the famously sensual Bacchanale in the final scene.
Contents:
Dieu! Dieu d'Israël! écoute la prière de tes enfants
Un jour, de nous tu détournas ta face
Arrêtez, ô mes frères!
Qui donc élève ici la voix? ... Ce Dieu que votre voix implore
C'est toi que sa bouche invective ... Israël! romps ta chaîne!
Que vois-je? Abimélech! ... Maudite à jamais soit la race
Hymne de joie, hymne de délivrance
Voici le printemps nous portant des fleurs
Je viens célébrer la victoire
Danse des prêtresses de Dagon
Printemps qui commence
Prelude
Samson, recherchant ma présence ... Amour, viens aider ma faiblesse!
J'ai gravi la montagne ... La victoire facile
Il faut, pour assouvir ma haine
Samson, me disais-tu, dans ces lieux
En ces lieux, malgré moi
Qu'importe à mon cœur désolé
Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix
Mais! ... non! que dis-je, hélas!
Vois ma misère, hélas!
Interlude ... L'aube qui blanchit déjà les coteaux
Bacchanale
Salut! Salut au juge d'Israël
Laisse-moi prendre ta main
Quand tu parlais, je restais sourd
Viens, Dalila, rendre grâce à nos dieux
Guidez ses pas vers le milieu du temple
Souviens-toi de ton serviteur.
