Summary:
The Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center famously opened in 1966 with the world premiere of Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, kicking off a season that featured nine new productions. The company unveiled its final new staging of the season on March 17, 1967, with a second world premiere--Marvin David Levy's Mourning Becomes Electra. An adaptation of plays by Eugene O'Neill, the opera resets the events of Aeschylus's Oresteia in New England in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War, with Agamemnon transformed into a Union general returning from battle. In this broadcast, recorded only weeks after the opera's first-ever performance, Zubin Mehta conducts a cast of legendary Met artists. John Macurdy and Marie Collier are General Ezra Manon and his wife Christine, alongside John Reardon and Evelyn Lear as their children, Orin and Lavinia. And in only his second season with the company, baritone Sherrill Milnes appears as Adam.
Contents:
Adam
Oh Adam
Adam
Someone is coming up the drive
I am glad of this chance to see you
Come to the point: what will you do?
What can you hope for?
I will not leave you!
The night I first heard you name
Do you hear? Ezra has returned
Lavinia!
Interlude
Christine? ... I am here
No, do not go, Christine!
How strange I feel
You whore! I will kill you!
Where is Mother?
Orin, my Orin!
"Bring me the dress of bridal silk"
Do not waste your disapproval on me
How death becomes the Mannons!
Has Mother succeeded?
Too weak to kill the man I hate
Who is there?
You bring the gift of love, Christine
Like Father, like me
No one. Nothing
Time to rest, time to sleep
Mother, you can live!
We are home, Father
Peter! ... Lavinia, is it you?
It is I who need to speak
Lavinia! ... She has said yes
Take this, Helen
You cannot stifle my thoughts
Mother! Mother!
Lavinia, come inside
Oh, do not make me wait
Welcome me!
