Summary:
A delightful fairy-tale adventure that teaches powerful lessons about love, friendship, and brotherhood, The Magic Flute--the Met's abridged, English-language adaptation of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte--can be appreciated by operagoers of all ages. In this radio broadcast from the 2018-19 season, the opera, which includes some of the composer's most popular tunes, bursts to life with an enchanting young cast. Tenor Ben Bliss is the noble Prince Tamino, who goes on a quest to rescue the imprisoned Princess Pamina, sung by soprano Erin Morley. Along the way, Tamino and the lovable bird catcher Papageno, sung by baritone Nathan Gunn, find themselves caught between the forces of good--represented by bass Morris Robinson's benevolent Sarastro--and evil--embodied by soprano Kathryn Lewek's malevolent Queen of the Night. On the podium, Mozart specialist Harry Bicket conducts this special holiday presentation, perfect listening for any time of the year.
Contents:
A serpent! A monster! How can I escape now?
Where am I?...I'm Papageno, that's my name.
Dialogue: You there! Tell me, friend, who are you? A bird?
This portrait's beauty I adore.
Dialogue: Prince Tamino, you must know she was kidnapped
Be not afraid. Good Prince, arise...My fate is grief and lamentation
Can all this be true?...Hm! Hm! Hm! Hm!
Dialogue: She has escaped! Pamina's escaped!
You will not dare escape again!
Dialogue: Who are you? You saved me!
You'll find your journey's end this way
Who comes now to the temple door?
Oh, endless night! My heart is aching!
How soft, how sweet, your magic tone.
Tip-toe, tip-toe! Hold your breath!
Long life to Sarastro. All hail Sarastro!
Sir! I kneel before you.
Conceited Princeling, if you please. Behold my master! On your knees!
March of the Priests
Dialogue: My brothers, we have have dedicated ourselves to the future of human kind
O Isis and Osiris
Dialogue: What a terrible night!
Why stay in the dark of night?
Dialogue: Prince, you have kept your word.
Aha! Here's my stubborn beauty! ; .Men were born to be great lovers
Begone!...Mother! Oh, Mother!
Here in my heart, Hell's bitterness is seething.
Dialogue: I cannot!...Why are you trembling?
Within our sacred temple
Dialogue: We shall leave you here, Prince Tamino
We bid you welcome a second time
Dialogue: Aren't you hungry, Tamino?
Now my heart is filled with sadness
Dialogue: You see, Tamino. I can keep still when I have to
A cuddly wife or sweetheart is Papageno's wish.
Dialogue: Here I am, lovey-dovey!
No fear of death or doom can daunt me
Tamino mine, I'm here at last!
The Trial (March): The flute protected us from fire
Papagena! Papagena! Papagena!
Pa- Pa- Pa- Papagena
Now to the temple doors
The sun's golden splendor has banished the night!
