Summary:
One of the most beloved artists in Met history, American soprano Leontyne Price made her debut on January 27, 1961, as Leonora in Verdi's Il Trovatore, alongside tenor Franco Corelli--in his first appearance with the company--as Manrico. Price would go on to sing more than 200 performances in a broad range of repertoire: from Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni to Elvira in Verdi's Ernani to the title role of Puccini's Tosca. Only six seasons after her debut, she made Met history, singing Cleopatra in the world premiere of Barber's Antony and Cleopatra to inaugurate the new Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center. Two decades later, she capped her illustrious career with a farewell performance as the title character of Verdi Aida, one of her trademark roles, which she sang at the Met 42 times between 1961 and 1985.
