- Summary:
- Marina is a young journalist based in Kiev, in the Ukraine. Ten years ago, she won a scholarship to study journalism in the US -- the first of her family ever to travel outside the borders of the former Soviet Union. When she returned to the Ukraine, she found the normal family relationships overturned when her mother implored her to rescue her father from loan sharks threatening to burn down his business and their home. But Marina's story is only too common in other countries throughout the region. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the move from centralized, authoritarian control to market economics and democracy shook the region to the core, destroying the stable and closed world of communism that previously presented young people with a secure, well-trodden path to adulthood.
