- Biography/History:
- Ḥefets family (often as surname Gentile or Gentilli); Shelomoh Ḥefets was from a branch of the family in Gorizia, Italy and a student of Samuel David Luzzato (1800-1865) in Padua, quoted by his teacher as a scholar (Penine Shadal - Scelta di scritti sparsi ebraici, ed. Gräber (Przemyśl, 1888) p. 30).
- Summary:
- This is a manuscript of an acrostic poem written by Shelomoh Ḥefets in honor of his colleagues Avraham Ḥai (Abramo) Mainster and Yehudah Arieh (Leone) Osimo on occasion of their rabbinical ordinations; acrostic is a combination of the first names of Mainster and Osimo (אברהם יהודה אריה). Abramo Mainster (Verona 1816-Rovigo 1882) is documented as being ordinated circa 1841 prior to his installation as rabbi in Viadana near Mantua that year; Osimo (d. 1869), Rabbi in Padua; all three were students of Samuel David Luzzato in Padua. Four stanzas, two of four lines and two of three lines, with an added note at the bottom above Ḥefets' autograph. Written in an Italian square script, vocalized; footnote in a Sephardic cursive script. Paper blind-stamped on upper left reading "Bath" inside a design.
