- Summary:
- This is a letter written by Moses Montefiore's secretary in London to rabbis in Ottoman Palestine for the purpose of documenting the collection efforts of Reverend James Little of Halifax, Yorkshire, for the poor in the Holy Land; Little had raised [the equivalent of] 2 Lira Sterling, and Montefiore wanted to send a message that the donation should be recorded in their ledger, and a receipt should be sent in return; Montefiore insists that they write the Reverend's name in the ledger using his spelling in Hebrew. Addressed are Hakham Bashi Avraham Ashkenazi, David ben Shimon (head of the North African community in Palestine), Mosheh Ṿenisṭe, Meir Auerbach (the first Ashkenazic chief rabbi of Jerusalem; first name crossed through), and Yaʻaḳov Yehudah Leib Leṿi (Av Beth Din of Jerusalem). Written in two paragraphs in an Ashkenazic cursive script on an onionskin document (stationery of Sir Moses Montefiore, rubber stamp in blue at upper center) with receipt number written at upper right corner; Moses Montefiore autograph at lower left in an Italian square script.
