- Summary:
- This is a manuscript leaf of a prayer against overabundance of rains and flooding, written for a Sephardic custom likely in south Italy or Greece. The prayer is mentioned in Shulḥan ʻarukh Oraḥ ḥayim (577:1) and derived from the prayers of Honi Ha'meaggel (Galilean Tanna, 1st century BC) and of Ishmael ben Elisha ha-kohen (1st century AD; recounted in Bavli Ta'anit 23a and Berakhot 7a respectively, see Rivkes, Be'er ha-golah to Oraḥ ḥayim 577). This manuscript version was to be recited independently of the Amidah as it is in a strictly Sephardic rite. Written in 8 lines in a square script (similar to 19th century Livornese examples); prayer vocalized. Small design following final line.
