Furness copy has a few manuscript notes in pencil and ink on verso of frontispiece plate; paper leaf with manuscript notes in pencil tipped in after page 730; paper slip with manuscript notes in pencil and ink laid in.

Furness copy has autograph ("Horace Howard Furness Jr. Philadelphia") on blank leaf preceding frontispiece plate; on the same blank leaf dated 19th-century manuscript inscription ("My dear Horace, In listening to the divine wisdom contained in these pages & in making it your constant counselor you need fear no worldly trials or temptations, for you will surely be the conqueror. Yours Grandma Christmas, 1879") recording the gift of this volume to Horace Howard Furness, Jr., from his grandmother Annis Jenks Furness (1802-1885) on Christmas 1879.
