Summary:
The number of buildings demolished, mutilated, improperly occupied and turned into ruins in the city of Buenos Aires, is enormous and increasing. As it is not possible to name them all, this book has made a chronologically ordered selection of fourteen of them, unraveling the complex web of their circumstance, relating them to other copies from Buenos Aires and abroad. In order to understand them as testimonies of their time, and how their existence today can contribute to satisfy creational and identity needs of the rich and changing society of Buenos Aires. The authors propose a search in Memory, History and Heritage to give voice to a significant silenced architecture of Buenos Aires, since its existence has been partially or totally denied when it was demolished during the 20th century. In this book, the authors have avoided taking a look at the past and the lost since the idealization of an era of great changes and urban concentration. The Buenos Aires of yesteryear is not studied as a friendly album of postcards, well-being, and European aesthetics. However, it does not avoid the comparative analysis between the heritage bequeathed by the generation of 1880 and the Centennial, with respect to the formal and significant poverty of architecture that the Bicentennial era leaves to future generations.
