Summary:
This is a leaf which the title page of a printed book was replicated in a drawing; the artist used linear hatched drawing, and the style of title page illustration was common in 18th century Italy and Germany. Three arches dominate the illustration, with Moses (with tablets) and Aaron (with censer) shown in the outer arches; center arch blank, as to contain the book title and imprint information. Verses from the Pentateuch are written below each figure (Deuteronomy 4:44 below Moses, Leviticus 16:3 below Aaron) and the drawing of three crowns in the center are explained with an excerpt of the Mishnah (Avot 4:13), "Crown of Torah, crown of priesthood... and the crown of a good name rises above them".
Notes:
Ms. leaf.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Script: Written in an Italian square script (Decalogue, Biblical and Mishnaic excerpts).
Decoration: Architectural motif inside drawn frame; three arches, with two central fluted columns, each with a stylized lotus on triangular pilaster, and central keystone; three crowns at upper center. The architrave features drawings of urns with flora and a drawing of a portal to the heaven (therefore avoiding depicting the sun).
Origin: Created in Italy during the later half of the 18th century, possibly to precede a codex manuscript by functioning as a title page.
